St. Paul’s High School Youth Group has undertaken many mission trips with Appalachia Service Project to repair and renovate homes and trailers in places of rural poverty.
Our first trip, with just four youth and two adults, was to Logan County, WV in 2013. We continued with mission trips roughly every two years, to locations in Nicholas County, Guyan Valley, and Kanawha County, WV; and Bland County and Wise County, VA, so far. Nearly 100 parishioners, youth and adults, have participated in an ASP trip since 2013, with many returning for a second, third, fourth, or even eighth trip. Participants have learned how to build railings and ramps, repair and replace tin and mulehide roofs, and replace floors and wallboards, among many other skills. Along the way, tripgoers spend time socializing with the individuals and families whose homes they’re working on, meeting other volunteers from around the country, and experiencing a different way of life.
If you’d like to contribute funds to support our next trip, you can donate online, or send a check payable to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with “ASP donation” in the memo line. Thank you!
